RESIDENTIAL REPIPE

Hexagon Plumbing brings commercial-grade technical precision to the residential landscape, specializing in the critical transition from failing infrastructure to high-performance systems. While traditional cast-iron and galvanized pipes were once the standard, they are finite materials that eventually become brittle and rust from the inside out, causing catastrophic, hidden water damage to your home’s structure and foundation. We replace these aging risks with modern PEX-A technology, which offers the flexibility necessary to withstand Houston’s shifting soil and a corrosion-proof lifespan that far exceeds its metal predecessors.

Avoiding the “retail trap” of big-box stores is essential to this investment; off-the-shelf products often prioritize lower upfront costs by utilizing inferior plastic components and lighter-gauge steel that are prone to premature failure. In contrast, our contractor-grade materials feature robust brass valves and superior build quality designed for decades of reliability. By choosing a licensed contractor over a DIY retail approach, you aren’t just patching a leak—you are implementing a sophisticated asset management strategy that ensures full code compliance, professional-backed warranties, and the long-term preservation of your property’s value.

CAST IRON

From the post-WWII era through the late 1970s, home builders utilized cast-iron piping as the primary standard for drain and waste systems, valuing its fire resistance and superior sound-dampening qualities. While originally engineered for a 30-to-50-year lifespan, many of these systems have now exceeded their structural viability and are undergoing a process of terminal decay.

Over decades of use, cast-iron suffers from internal oxidation and “channeling,” a process where the bottom of the pipe effectively rots away from the inside out, leaving the remaining metal paper-thin and extremely brittle. In environments with shifting foundations—a hallmark of the Houston landscape—this weakened material inevitably cracks and fractures, leading to persistent, hidden leaks. Because these failures often occur beneath the slab or deep within wall cavities, they can cause extensive water damage, toxic mold growth, and compromised structural integrity long before the first sign of a leak appears on the surface.

GALVANIZED

Commonly installed in homes from the early 20th century through the 1960s, galvanized piping was the industry standard for residential water distribution, favored for its immense structural strength and fire resistance. These steel pipes were dipped in a protective zinc coating intended to prevent corrosion, with an expected service life of approximately 40 to 50 years. However, the vast majority of these systems have now far exceeded their functional viability.

The deterioration of galvanized systems is a silent but destructive process:

  • Zinc Erosion & Internal Rust: Once the protective zinc layer inevitably wears away, the raw steel is exposed to oxygen and water, triggering immediate internal oxidation.

  • Tuberculation: This rust builds up in jagged “nodes” inside the pipe. This not only discolors your water with a brownish tint but also physically narrows the pipe’s diameter, leading to a permanent and severe drop in water pressure.

  • Brittleness and Pinhole Leaks: As the metal oxidizes, it becomes paper-thin and incredibly brittle. Unlike modern materials, aged galvanized steel cannot withstand the “house settling” or foundation shifts common in Houston, leading to stress cracks and pinhole leaks. These leaks often remain hidden behind walls for months, causing extensive wood rot and toxic mold growth before a homeowner notices a damp spot.

PEX

CROSSED-LINKED POLYETHYLENE

Upgrading to PEX-A technology is a high-performance investment in your home’s long-term integrity, offering a corrosion-proof lifespan of 50+ years that traditional metal pipes simply cannot match. Unlike rigid copper or brittle cast-iron, PEX-A’s molecular “memory” allows it to expand and contract, providing a critical defense against both hard freezes and Houston’s shifting clay soil.

This flexibility not only prevents catastrophic bursts but also streamlines the installation process, significantly reducing labor costs and intrusive wall demolition. By replacing failing infrastructure with this sophisticated, manifold-based system, you eliminate hidden leak points and internal rust, ensuring consistent water pressure and a secure residential asset for decades to come.

Repipe Insight

The Risk of Aging Metal

Aged cast-iron and galvanized pipes become brittle over time. Internal rust and hairline cracks often lead to hidden leaks, causing severe structural rot and mold damage long before they are detected.

The PEX Advantage

Upgrading to PEX piping eliminates corrosion risks. Its flexibility allows for fewer joints and "scale-resistant" walls, ensuring consistent water pressure and a leak-free lifespan of 50+ years.

Property Preservation

Replacing failing infrastructure is a critical investment. Modern PEX repiping not only protects your home from catastrophic water damage but also significantly increases your residential resale value.

Repipe Essential Guide

The "Ticking Time Bomb"

Aged cast-iron and galvanized pipes rot from the inside out. By the time you see a leak, the pipe is likely brittle and cracking throughout, risking catastrophic water damage to your home's structure and foundation.

The PEX Advantage

Modern PEX-A piping is corrosion-proof and freeze-resistant. Unlike rigid metal, its flexibility allows it to expand and contract, making it the superior choice for high-performance residential water distribution.

Houston Soil & Foundations

Our expansive clay soil causes homes to shift. We install repipe systems with engineered slack and professional hangers, ensuring your new plumbing can withstand foundation movement without snapping or leaking.
